TOOTH WHITENING

Teeth can become stained due to two primary factors: surface staining on the enamel and intrinsic discoloration in the dentin layer. Extrinsic staining occurs when particles from food and beverages form a protein film on the tooth’s surf ace, while intrinsic staining happens when pigmented particles penetrate the tooth’s pores, causing yellowing of the dentin. Various factors contribute to tooth discoloration:

Food & Drink: Beverages like coffee, tea, red wine, and dark sodas, along with certain fruits and vegetables, are known to cause teeth staining.

Tobacco: Both smoking and chewing tobacco can lead to yellowing and staining of the teeth.

Oral Hygiene: Neglecting daily brushing and flossing can result in tooth discoloration.

Trauma or Illness: Childhood illnesses or trauma affecting tooth development, as well as injuries to adult teeth, can cause yellowing. Certain diseases and treatments like chemotherapy may also lead to discolored teeth.

Age: With age, teeth naturally yellow as the enamel thins and the underlying dentin becomes more visible. This combination of surface and deep staining leads to progressive yellowing of teeth over time.
